Audience Analysis

Understanding

People will go to see horror movies expecting be come out freaked out and scared. Not only would they be expecting this but they would most likely want this. They go to see horrors for the fun of being frightened by what they see so after watching a trailer, if they don’t think that they are going to get this from that film, they probably won’t watch it.

The audience for this genre know the general content of a horror film. They know that gore will be used on most occasions, the possibility of supernatural storylines, the way that the film will seek to make the audience jump and be shocked by the images that are put in front of them.

Another thing that the audience would expect to see is the types of characters in horror films. They are most than likely going to be stereotypical horror characters in every horror film you see. For instance, the scared weak characters (more than often played by a female), the strong male character who takes charge (sometimes but not often played by a woman) and the evil characters in the film. The evil characters could be ghosts, zombies or anything supernatural or even human.

The audience would know, roughly, to what degree of gore and horror there will be by the certificate given. They would probably be more interested in films with a higher age certificate if the aim is to be more scared during the film.

Interest

Like I said above, people who watch horror films go to them to be scared so hopefully people would watch my trailer thinking that this is what they would be getting out of it. The more creepy and mysterious it is, the more likely they will respond.

As my target audience are for those who have a general interest in the supernatural, this would be another factor for why they would view this film. They would probably already have a fairly good knowledge of ghosts and other things paranormal so would enjoy seeing this portrayed in a film.

I would think that those factors I have mentioned in the audience profile would contribute to why they would see this film as well especially age. I believe that because the age group of the people in the film is 15-25, my target audience which is also 15-25 would feel like they can connect to this more. The same goes to education levels. The people in the film are students so students in my target audience would, again, feel like they have something connected to the people in the film and feel like it is more aimed towards them.

My film is being done using a handheld camera. This is a growing method in film making, mainly in the horror genre and is being more and more popular with it audiences. I think that, as this has been reflected in my trailer, people would go to see this film. Whether this is because they find them scary or just want to compare them.

Environment

There are many different ways to advertise the trailer these days. These are virally, such as sending the video through email or on websites (YouTube), during TV breaks or at the cinema before a film or in the foyer. I would advertise my trailer using all of these methods as, this way, there would be more access to them so would be more likely to grow my audience.

For viral advertisements, I would use YouTube to show my trailer. This is a free to upload this video so wouldn’t cost me anything to do this and is a widely used website so I know that people would see it here. People also use this website, solely to look through film trailer to see what they want to watch.

I would use the TV break to advertise my film. I would put this trailer late at night, either on a film channel or in between programmes such as ghost hunters or most haunted as I know that my target audience would be watching these channels. Due to the content and certificate of my film I would have to put it on a late night showing.

Lastly, I would put in on in the cinema trailer parts at the beginning of a movie. I would choose to put it at the beginning of a film that has the same genre or actors as my own as those watching it would probably be my target audience.

Audience Profile

The demographical factors

As my characters in the film are 15-25, my target audience, being 15-25 would feel that there is a connection and would feel that the trailer is being aimed towards them.

Although, I don’t think that the gender of my audience would be specifically one type, however, I would say that male genders are more likely to be interested in horror. I do not believe that my trailer or film will target any specific sexuality as well. The majority of those in my trailer are male so this alone may get the male audience feeling that this film is for them.

As the age range is quite low, I don’t think that occupation has too much to do with my audience. Unless those watching have the same occupation to my characters in the film (ghost investigators) or in an occupation relative to supernatural beliefs.

My film is set in an abandoned angle battery so not much of the surrounding location is shown. However, it is obvious that it isn’t in a city and would be seen as most likely being in an old quiet town. I think that the audiences who live in an area similar to this or have these sorts of locations would be more interested in my film.

I don’t think that political ideology is really relevant to my film or trailer as nothing is shown about the culture or background of that country that would affect my audience in any way.

In my opinion, class is much less significant that age and gender when it comes to who is interested in my genre of film. Although, lower class may be more attracted to the gore and violence (maybe because they are more exposed to this in life), I don’t think that this is a huge factor to consider.

Educational levels may contribute to my target audience as the characters that are in my trailer and film are students. As my target audience is 15-25, they would most likely be students so this could make them feel more like the trailer is being aimed at them and that they will easily be able to connect with the film and the people in it.

The main factor that would make my audience is the general interests. This is what most people are trying to connect with a film so they know they will enjoy it. Those with an interest of the supernatural or of the TV programme (Ghost hunters or Most Haunted) that my film is based around will be the people who will be interested in my film.

BBFC Classification guidelines 2009

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

This is relevant to my own trailer as there it will contain strong threat and menace although not sadistic or sexualised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

This is relevant to my trailer as there is likely to be small amount of strong language to express shock, however, not to express aggression and will not be in the category of the strongest language.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence’s but any portrayal or sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

This is relevant to my trailer as in will contain a lot of violence but will not be greatly detailed and will not be sexualised or sadistic. There will also be no references to sexual violence in my trailer.

Committee of advertising practise

The codes that apply to my trailer:

Harm and offense

1) Advertisements must not include material that is likely to condone or encourage behaviour that prejudices health or safety

-I will ensure that although in my trailer, what my characters are doing could be potentially dangerous; I will not glamorise or show it in a positive way.

2) Advertisements must not include visual effects or techniques that are likely to affect adversely member of the audience with photosensitive epilepsy.

-I will make sure that when editing my piece, I will try not to put flashing images that will cause this.

3) Advertisements must not be excessively noisy or strident. The maximum subjective loudness of advertisements must be consistent and in line with the maximum loudness of programmers and junction material. Broadcasters must endeavour to minimise the annoyance that perceived volume imbalances could cause, with the aim that the audiences need not adjust the volume of their television.

-I will make sure that my volume is relatively consistent unless I intend to use a lower volume in order to create suspense

4) Advertisements must not condone or encourage violence, crime, disorder or anti-social behaviour

-I will do the same for what I will be doing for code 1

5) Advertisements must not distress the audience without justifiable reason. Advertisements must not exploit the audience’s fears or superstitions.

-I will keep this in mind when I am filming and editing to make sure that my shots are not to distressing unless necessary for my advertising.

Recognition of Advertising

1) Television advertisements, except for programme promotion, must not refer to themselves in a way that might lead viewers to believe they are watching a programme.

-I believe that my piece will not give this impression.

2) Advertisements from editorial content, especially if they use a situation, performance or style reminiscent of editorial content, to prevent the audience being confused between the two. The audience should quickly recognise the message as an advertisement.

-As my trailer is style reminiscent of an editorial content, I will be careful to make the different obvious for my audience.
